Hiring and talking to an attorney can be an important decision, whether you're seeking legal advice for a personal or business matter. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your consultation and ensure you find the right attorney for your needs:
Define your needs:
Before looking for an attorney, take the time to define your needs and do research on the topic for which you are seeking legal help for. What type of legal matter do you need help with? Are you looking for a specialist in a specific area of law? Clarifying your needs and goals will help you find an attorney who has the right expertise to help you. If you are a currently registered UC Merced student, make an appointment with our Law Clinic to learn more about your legal issues.
Do your research:
Look for attorneys who have experience in the area of law that you need assistance with. You can search online, ask for referrals from friends or family, or meet with the Law Clinic to see if they can get you into contact with an attorney. Check the attorney's credentials and read reviews or testimonials from previous clients through the State Bar’s Website the State Bar's Website
Check their availability:
Make sure the attorney you choose is available to take on your case and has the time and resources to give it the attention it deserves. If an attorney has a heavy caseload or seems too busy to return your calls or emails promptly, they may not be the right fit for your needs.
Schedule a consultation:
Once you've identified a few potential attorneys, schedule a consultation with each of them. During the consultation, you can ask questions, discuss your legal matter, and get a sense of whether the attorney is a good fit for you. Some attorneys offer free consultations, while others may charge a fee.
Ask the right questions:
During the consultation, be sure to ask the attorney about their experience, fees, and communication style. Ask how they would approach your case and what the likely outcome might be. Don't be afraid to ask questions about anything you don’t understand or concerns you may have.
Understand the fees:
Ask the attorney about their fee structure, including how they bill and what expenses you can expect. Make sure you understand how much the attorney charges and what services are included in that fee. You should also ask about any additional costs, such as court fees or expert witness fees.
Communication:
Communication is key in any attorney-client relationship. Make sure you understand how the attorney prefers to communicate and how often you can expect to hear from them. Ask if there is someone else you should contact if you can't reach the attorney directly.
Remember that finding the right attorney takes time and effort. By doing your research, asking the right questions, and clarifying your needs, you can find an attorney who the right fit for you and your legal matter.
